The Red Room. Sirpa Pääkkönen For me one reason to return to Hermitage in Saint Petersburg again and again is Henri Matisse . When I was very young, I watched his paintings in art books and admired his bright and joyful colours and strong shapes. Emotions spread. Matisse gave me happiness and joy. When I very many years later stand in front of Matisse’s paintings in the Hermitage I can feel the same emotions which I felt as a young girl. That’s why art is so powerful. Photos: The State Hermitage Museum Here you have a good reason to travel to Saint Petersburg: In the State Hermitage Museum you can just now see a very powerful  solo exhibition by the German artist Anselm Kiefer . The exhibition is a contemporary artist’s dedication to the Russian poet Velimir Khlebnikov . The exhibition will be seen in the colossal Nikolaevsky hall of the Winter Palace where Kiefer has created about 30 new big paintings. For Kiefer, poetical production often turns into a starting point: “I think in pictures. Poems help me with this. They are like buoys in the sea. I swim to them, from one to the other. In between, without them, I am lost. They are the handholds where something masses together in the infinite expanse”, he describes. Great paintings are mainly brown and grayish by their colors. January If you don't have your own cat, you can go to the cat coffee shop or to The Cat's Republic. They are great places. I dont't have my own cat, but as a kid I had them always, sometimes many. I learn to know how crazy , clever , stubborn , independent, wild , wise and sweet they are. When I nowadays want to meet a cat I go to the a coffee shop. In Finland we have two very nice cat coffee shops, one in Helsinki and one in Tampere. Sometimes I travel to Tallinn where there is a cat coffee shop or to Saint Petersburg where you'll find a  whole Cat's Republic. I take my camera with me and ask kindly the cats sit down and be my models when I take photos. But what they do: they turn  their backs or go to sleep under a chair or into a basket. Vasily Kandinskyn maisemamaalaus taiteilijan varhaiskaudelta. Jos matka suuntautuu lähiaikoina Pietariin, kannattaa käväistä Venäläisen taiteen museossa . Siellä on 4. joulukuuta saakka esillä venäläisen avantgardismin uranuurtajan Vassily Kandinskyn (1866-1944 ) näyttely. Näyttely on rakennettu kiinnostavan vuoropuhelun muotoon. Kandinskyn maalauksia ympäröivät teokset, joista taiteilija sai vaikutteita tai joiden syntyyn taiteilija itse vaikutti. Kandinskyllä oli seuraajia ja jäljittelijöitä. Aivan näyttelyn alussa tuntuu siltä kuin astuisi kansatieteelliseen museoon. Esillä on paljon kansatieteellisiä esineitä ja taideteoksia. Linkki Kandinskyyn on siinä, että taiteilija opiskeli nuorena etnografiaa. Hän teki tutkimusmatkan muun muassa Vologdan alueelle ja tutki siellä kansanperinnettä. Some friendly grannies feed them or they get their meals from wastebaskets or they hunt mice. Those cats I’ve seen very many when I’ve visited Saint Petersburg. What I would like to see are the Hermitage cats with their special reputation. But it’s not easy. You hear about them but you don’t see them if you don’t take into account books published from the Hermitage cats. Those you can buy in the museum. Now I don’t tell the whole truth, because I really have seen the Hermitage cats, but not in the museum. I have seen them in the Cat’s Republic in Saint Petersburg. Yrttivoita keisarilliseen tyyliin Jelisejevin ravintolassa. Kuvat: Sirpa Pääkkönen    Jelisejevin h e rkkukauppa Nevski prospektilla Pietarissa on kuin aikamatka tsaarin ajan historialliseen loistoon. Katossa kimaltelevat kristallikruunut ja lasimaalaukset värittävät ikkunoita.  Iloinen melodia täyttää salin. Flyygelin koskettimet hyppivät, vaikka soittaja ei istukaan soittotuolilla. Magiaa siis. Hyllyt notkuvat herkkuja: kakkuja, makeisia, hunajaa, kaviaaria, herkkumakkaroita. Häitä suunnitteleville on hääkakkuja. Marsipaanista ja suklaasta on muotoiltu  jopa luonnollisen kokoinen kenkä morsiamelle. Täytyy vain odottaa, että morsian tai sadun Tuhkimo sujauttaa sen jalkaansa. Jelisejevin herkkukauppa. Kauppa remontoitiin loistoonsa muutama vuosi sitten. Ulkonäkö on peräisin vuodelta 1903, jolloin tsaari oli vielä vallassa ja ruhtinaat ja porvaristo ostivat kaupasta tryffeleitä. Sortavalan ortodoksinen kirkko. Venäjän Karjalassa ilmestyvä Karjalan Sanomat kertoo, että Pietarista pääsee ensi kesänä matkustamaan Sortavalaan nostalgisella retrojunalla viikoittain. Junaa vetää vuodelta 1947 peräisin oleva hiilellä toimiva veturi. Kolme punaruskeaa vaunua  näyttävät lehden julkaisemassa kuvassa vanhoilta puuvaunuilta, mutta uutisen mukaan sisältä ne ovat nykyaikaisia toisen luokan vaunuja. Museojunalla matka kestää kaksi vuorokautta, yöt nukutaan junassa. Retrojuna teki ensimmäisen matkansa Pietarista Sortavalaan viime vuoden kesäkuussa. Kirkko sisältä. Olen matkustanut junalla Sortavalasta Pietariin pari vuotta sitten. Kostamuksesta tullut yöjuna pysähtyi aamuvarhaisella Sortavalan asemalla noukkimaan yövaunuihinsa muutaman unisen kulkijan hyteissä jo nukkuvien seuraksi.
