In Finland it’s easy for foreign visitors to visit museums. In many places the information texts are in English and in Swedish besides in Finnish, for example in Helsinki city Museum. One of the most charming venues for the Helsinki city museum venues is Hakasalmi villa in the heart of the city where you can see the exhibition Music! Echoes from the past of a city.  The exhibition is open until the end of February 2017. The   exhibition provides glimpses of the diversity of music in Helsinki before and now. You’ll get information about school songs, instrument lessons, Christmas hymns, park concerts, walkmans or band T-shirts. The photos tell how people once used to live and what kind of was  the environment around them: their homes, clothes, workplaces. New born babies in Kotka in 1950s. At the Finnish Museum of Photography you can now see how Finns lived 1922-1969. And what is best you can look  the photos also on Flickr . The exhibition is based by images from the collections of the Central Union of Consumer Co-operatives. Images of urbanization, industrialization and the emergence of consumer culture and the welfare tell about Finnish society. The vantage point is the working class. From late 12 th century Finland was an integral part of Sweden. In 1809 Finland was incorporated into the Russia Empire as the autonomous Grand Duchy of Finland. Saaren pääkirkot. Kuvat: Sirpa Pääkkönen   Viime keväänä uutisoitiin matkageenistä. Tutkijat puhuivat DRD4-geenistä, joka saa osan ihmisistä herkästi liikkeelle. Se oli jo osalla esi-isistämme, jotka vaelsivat kauas synnyinseuduiltaan ja etsivät tutkimusmatkoillaan uusia, tuntemattomia paikkoja. On geeni olemassa tai ei, tunnistan siihen liittyvästä kuvauksesta itseni. Kun edellinen matka on ohi, alan pian suunnitella seuraavaa kohdetta, jossa on hienoja maisemia, museoita, kulttuurikohteita tai historiallisia nähtävyyksiä. En muista , että koskaan olisin katunut yhtään matkaa. Sen muistan, että jotkut matkat ovat olleet merkityksellisempiä kuin toiset. Paikka on sykähdyttänyt ja jättänyt mielen pohjalle pysyvän muiston. Sellainen on Kizhin museosaari Venäjän Karjalassa keskellä kaunista Äänisjärveä. Photos from Tallinn's Old Town by Sirpa Pääkkönen From Helsinki Finland it takes two hours to get to Tallinn by boat. So near but at the same time you’ll get to a very different world. The reason is history. Tallinn is a medieval city and has a very beautiful but quite small Old Town. Once it was surrounded by walls and there are still quite many old towers from the middle age. The Old Town is beautiful in all times of the year. Just now the autumn colors make it colorful, bright and charming even the weather can be cloudy and grey. Tallinn was founded in 1248, but the earliest human settlements are over 5,000 years old. So it is one of the oldest capital cities of Northern Europe. Due to its strategic location, the city became a major trade hub, especially from the 14th to the 16th century, when it grew in importance as part of the Hanseatic League.   Caj Bremeriä ei voi muuta kuin ihailla. Syntymävuosi on 1929, mutta lepäilemään ei ehdi, kun mestarivalokuvaaja julkaisee kirjoja, järjestää näyttelyitä ja päivittää Facebookia. Me hänen FB-kaverimme saamme katsella upeita luontokuvia, ruokakuvia ja historiakuvia, joissa valokuvaaja avaa muistoja menneisyytensä. Hänen päivityksissään on aina mukana ripaus huumoria ja hyväntuulisuutta. Ruokakirja Mämmikouran keittiössä ilmestyi pari vuotta sitten. Nyt valokuvaajalta on ilmestynyt valokuvakirja Takaisin Karjalaan . Siihen liittyvä näyttely on esillä Akseli Gallen-Kallelan museossa Tarvaspäässä. Valokuvateos pohjautuu Caj Bremerin ja toimittaja Sakari Määttäsen Neuvosto-Karjalaan tekemiin matkoihin 1979-1982. Poikkeusluvin tehty matka julkaistiin Helsingin Sanomissa 12-osaisena matkakertomuksena. Kaikki kuvat eivät tuolloin mahtuneet lehteen, joten kirjassa on laajempi valikoima upeita matkakuvia. Yrttejä Turun apteekkimuseossa. Kuvat: Sirpa Pääkkönen Turku tuo mieleen Tallinnan, ainakin sen vuoksi, että historia tulee vastaan kummankin kaupungin  ydinkeskustassa. Turussa siitä muistuttavat tuomiokirkko, Vanhan suurtorin alue, Turun linna, Luostarinmäen käsityöläismuseo ja aivan keskustassa Aurajoen rannalla sijaitseva viehättävä pieni Apteekkimuseo, jonka yhteydessä on säätyläiskoti 1700-luvun alusta. Apteekin kalustus ja esineet  ovat 1800-luvulta. Siispä tutkimaan, miten vaivoja hoidettiin 1800-luvulla. Yrttihuoneessa roikkuu katosta kuivattuja yrttikimppuja. Siellä on laventelia, korianteria, ukontulikukkaa, sitruunamelissaa, piparminttua  ja suopursua.  Ne tepsivät muun muassa ilmavaivoihin, kouristuksiin, vatsakipuihin ja yskään, Niillä parannettiin myös haavoja. Hieman järeämpää lääkettä oli arsenikki, jota säilytettiin myrkkykaapissa. Sillä taltutettiin hammassärky. Tislauslaboratoriossa hienonnettiin lääkekasveja ja valmistettiin rohdoi...

Imatra Sate Hotel. Photos: Sirpa Pääkkönen Imatra State Hotel is one of the most beautiful buildings in Finland. In the European art nouveau building the style is rich and exciting . All walls are different and details countless. The house has towers and a wide range of windows and ornamentation based on the Finnish topics . For example, the main entrance you can find small reliefs of birds, fox and deer . The building was designed by Usko Nyström and completed in 1903. The architect   had received from the Senate a free hand to design a new river beach hotel. The condition was that the building was supposed to be made of stone. The previous two wooden hotels were burned. This room belonged to emperor Nicholas II. Grand hotel de Cascade was opened in 1903. Later the name was changed to Imatra State hotel. The building was like a medieval knight’s castle. There were 53 different-sized rooms and a large dining room. Material was light-coloured limestone. ...
